My husband and I met on Match.com. In a move that took me out of my comfort zone I contacted him first. I had noticed that he looked at my profile a few times which signaled to me that the interest was there on his part. I thought ?What do I have to loose?,? and quickly crafted a message where I gave him my personal email address and my Google voice number that I used solely for dating suitors. The rest is history.
Fast forward three years and I see that women continue to find success in being the pursuer when dating online. A girlfriend of mine met her current beau on Bumble. I was surprised to hear she was using the app since she never had trouble getting attention from men when we would go to bars and parties. But now she seems happier than I?ve ever seen her with her new guy. Another male friend of mine is on Bumble and likes that fact that when he finally talks to a women she is genuinely interested, otherwise she wouldn?t have made the first move!

A recent article in The New York Times reports quantitative proof showing that women who make the first move fare better than women who are more passive and fare better than men when it comes to response rate.
A few facts from the article:

  • Women who send the first message were 2.5 times more likely to receive a response than men who did the same
  • 30 percent of women?s first messages end up in a date, while only about 12 percent of first messages men send turn into a date
  • A woman is more likely to have a dialogue with a more attractive man if she makes first contact

My theory about why this is so is because of one criteria men evaluate about women in the early stages of a relationship – Signs that she is attracted to him. When women make the first move the man gets the signal ?She?s into me,? and he doesn?t have to pull out his decoder ring to determine if the attraction is mutual.
The article from the times stems from a research conducted by OkCupid . You can best believe further blog posts will cover over findings from the OkCupid research.
